- The age of your children. If you have school-aged children who are gone most of the day then taking a job that requires you to be on the phone would be no problem. However, if you have younger children who are still at home it may be more difficult to have a job that requires the use of a phone.
- Your tech savvy skills. Data entry jobs are really awesome and easy. The pay varies for these jobs but typically, the more you can type the more money you will make. Therefore, you need to make sure that you are up-to speed on your typing as well as your familiarity with computers.
- This is still a job. It is super tempting when you start working from home to stay in your pjs all day long and to people stalk on Facebook. The temptation is there because; well you do not have a boss that might pop their head in your cubicle to check up on you. Make no mistake; if you are working from home, you are still doing a job. You should still get up, shower, dress, work, eat lunch, work, and then finish for the day. Time management is essential if you plan to work from home even if the job you are doing is flexible. I recommend the book, Tell Your Time by Amy Lynn Andrews. It is a great resource for those looking to manage their time better.
If you are looking for an online work at home job, here are a few jobs that really pay:
- Virtual Assistant – This is the perfect job for those that possess exceptional administrative skills. You could work for bloggers, companies looking for remote assistants, event planners or even bookkeepers. Anastasiya Day has a great video and article on How To Grow As A Virtual Assistant that will help you decide if this is the right career path for you. If you decide it is, you can search for jobs on either Home with the Kids or Team Double Click. You can expect to earn any where between $10/hour and $30/hour.
- Online Reseller – You can make a sustainable amount of money by selling items on eBay, Amazon, or Craigslist. If you search out people who are too busy to sell their used items themselves you can make even more money. eBay has a course that you can take to help you master selling on their site called eBay UniversityClassroom. You will need to be a self-starter in order to succeed with this endeavor. The earnings you can expect depend on how you price yourself out. You can charge either by the item {typically ranging from $5 to $25 an item} or by percentage of the sale {typically ranging from 20 to 40 percent}. If you have a high seller rating on eBay you can register on their Directory of Trading Assistants to help validate your selling business.
- Call Center Operator – For this job, you will need a quiet area as you will be dealing with the phone and handling customer calls. You will have to be professional, pleasant and be able to read a script sounding as natural as possible. You can expect to earn anywhere between $7 and $15 per hour. Some companies will pay you more if sales are involved. You can apply at Working Solutions or Live Ops.
- Data Entry – This is one of the easier work at home jobs to have but also one of the most tedious. You will need to possess a high typing speed, typically somewhere around 60 wpm. There are a lot of spammers out there under this job category so be very careful and selective on who and where you sign up under. You can expect to make between $6 and $20 per hour and sometimes companies will pay you by document processed. Home with the Kids features a data entry section but again you will need to be careful in your selection process.
- Interview Transcriber– Many journalists and writers do not have the time to transcribe the countless hours of interviews they conduct. That is where this position comes in – you receive an email containing the interview audio file and you transcribe exactly what is spoken on the audio file. You will need to have exceptional typing skills along with excellent accuracy. You can expect to make $5 to $40 per hour. You can find jobs by signing up at sites such as Verbalink and Scribie.
- Blogging – I couldn’t NOT include this one since I make a full-time income at home with my kids running around me.
