After posting my How to Stick to an All Cash Grocery Budget post, many of y’all wanted to know what the recipe for our homemade dinner rolls were. Making homemade bread is such a fun and delicious way to save more money on your grocery budget and I swear, my bread machine * was one of the best investments I have ever made.
I will tell you that I do not make these with 100 percent whole wheat flour because we have not completely conditioned ourselves to enjoy the taste of all whole wheat bread but we are slowly getting there! 🙂
These rolls are also great to freeze so you can reheat anytime you some delicious homemade dinner rolls. Oh and I cannot make a small roll to save my life so even though the original recipe says that it will yield about 20-24 rolls, I usually only get about 15 out of it because…I like big rolls and I cannot lie. 😉

Homemade Dinner Rolls
1 cup warm milk (I usually put in the microwave for about 30 seconds to 1 minute)
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups flour (I use half whole-wheat and half-unbleached flour.)
2 1/4 teaspoon active dry yeast
Directions
Add ingredients in the order on the list in your bread machine. Run on dough cycle. When dough is complete, divide into 20-24 portions and shape into balls.
Place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for 15 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees for 13-16 minutes until golden brown.
Yield: 20-24 rolls
These are super tasty without adding anything extra to them but we do like to brush a little melted butter on top of them for an even sweeter, buttery taste!

I love writing about my family's journey towards financial freedom and about ways to optimize your life, save money, and live well! Here are a few more ways you can save money:
- Cook at home. During our debt-free journey we NEVER went out to eat because we honestly couldn't afford it, and now, even though we could afford it, we still don't go out to eat that often. But I'll be honest, meal planning was such a struggle for me during that time, but it totally saved our budget when I did it effectively! I ended up using a meal planning service for about two years which helped me not only meal plan better, but also helped me to create wholesome, healthy, and delicious meals for my whole family! You can see all the details and try different meal plans based on your preferences here .
- Earn gift cards. A simple way to earn a little extra money from home by using the Swagbucks site instead of Google for searching. I actually still do this to earn Home Depot gift cards for all our home projects. You can also do surveys and a few other things to earn points, which you redeem to purchase gift cards from them. Swagbucks is what we used to earn Amazon gift cards to help pay for Christmas or cash through PayPal to help pay off our debt faster. You can sign up for Swagbucks here.
- Switch Cell Phone Providers. One of the best things we did on the debt-free journey was to switch from our super expensive $150+ a month cell phone bill to a much more affordable plan! In fact, my cell phone bill is only $30 a month (my husband's plan is paid by his business)! Check out Mint Mobile here to see if you can save your family some money!
- Create a budget. It took us a while to figure out a budget that works well for our family, but the two things that we have used over the years and still do (and still love) are my Budget Binder and Personal Capital (online budgeting software). You can see my Budget Binder tutorial here and check out Personal Capital here.
These look so good! They remind me of the cafeteria rolls.
Haha. Lydia must have went to a much nicer school then I did! ^ These look delicious! I’m going to try them out this weekend!
They are amazing and your husband will probably love them – or at least mine does and him and the boys I can’t keep them longer than a day! 🙂
Making these tonight. Thanks Jessi!
Can these be frozen? I work and go to grad School and with 3 boys and a husband making food a head of time and freezing them would be amazing. Also are the hot pocket freezable?
Yes! I freeze them all the time. 🙂
Do you freeze them before they are baked or after?
