For the longest time now, I’ve wanted to bake my own bread. Being a Southern woman, I grew up cooking and baking. I love the smell of fresh baked bread in the oven. I truly believe that fresh, just-out-of-the-oven bread, with a little butter or jam is one of life’s simplest pleasures. Especially when it is followed by a nice, hot cup of coffee.
The only issue I have ever had with baking bread is kneading it. God bless the women, like my Grandmothers, who had no choice but to knead bread dough by hand. I assure you, it is no simple feat! That is why, for my birthday this year, I used my birthday money to purchase my bread machine.
I purchased the cheapest one I could find because after all my research, I found that you actually do not want to bake your bread in the bread machine. This post from Salad in A Jar is an informative post on comparing bread baked in the oven and baked using a bread machine. That said I knew I did not need to purchase a $200 machine that would do the same exact thing as the $70 machine. The one I purchased is an Oster 2 Pound Express Bread Maker from Amazon.
Since purchasing my bread machine, I have not purchased a single loaf of bread. In fact, the bread goes fast now in our house (no more end pieces lingering until they go stale). We enjoy this recipe for sandwiches of all kinds, breakfast, or just a quick snack. We’ve even taken it camping with us. I promise this is a super yummy bread recipe that will not disappoint.
***The recipe below is the original recipe that I shared, but I’ve since updated this recipe to use honey instead of sugar and I have subbed out the all-purpose flour for white whole wheat flour. The directions are still the same.
Homemade Wheat Bread
Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F.)
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 2 tablespoons oil (I use canola oil)
- 4 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cup whole-wheat flour
- 1 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons dry yeast
**It is extremely important that when using a bread machine, you place all the ingredients in the bread machine as listed in order for it to knead correctly.
Directions:
Put all ingredients in the bread machine in the order listed. Set on dough cycle.
When dough cycle is finished, take dough out and shape into a loaf in a greased bread pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20-45 minutes (until doubled).
Bake at 350 degrees F. for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Enjoy!
If you don’t have a bread machine, the original recipe for this bread, found at Tammy’s Recipes will instruct you on how to do it by hand.
Below is the updated recipe which uses no sugar and replaces the all-purpose flour with white whole wheat.

- 1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F.)
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 2 tablespoons oil (I use canola oil)
- 1/4 Cup Honey
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cup whole-wheat flour
- 1 cup white whole wheat flour
- 2 teaspoons dry yeast
- Put all ingredients in the bread machine in the order listed. Set on dough cycle.
- When dough cycle is finished, take dough out and shape into a loaf in a greased bread pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20-45 minutes (until doubled).
- Bake at 350 degrees F. for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Thanks for this, Jessi! I’ve been considering baking our bread instead of buying store-bought for quite a long time now. This was the push I needed!
It’s super yummy! In fact, I’m about to bake another loaf because a certain two year took a big bite out of the remaining loaf from Monday! 🙂
Hi Jessi! Why do they say not to bake the bread in the bread machine? I’ve always done that and with no problems! Plus, it tastes delicious! Your recipe sounds good. Maybe you should try baking it in the machine and see what happens. Would save you some steps. Thanks for sharing! Blessings from Bama!
It’s more of the way the loaf comes out of the bread machine (hole from the kneading paddle and rounded corners).
I don’t have a bread machine but I’d love one! Homemade bread is so much tastier!
Hi, Jessi! I really liked this recipe. This bread looks amazing. I don’t have a bread maker, but now I really want one. 😀
I tried your bread recipe today and this is the best one
I have ever used…my bread was moist and perfect..I hate baking my bread in the bread machine because of the little thing in the bottom. Will I use your recipe again yes…I had made homemade jam the other day, so a little butter and jam and I had my best dessert of the day …thank you for sharing..
